Delaine Le Bas at NCA

31 May 2025

Following a month long residency in the gallery, Turner Prize nominee Delaine Le Bas opens +Fabricating My Own Myth – Red Threads & Silver Needles, a monumental installation spanning both gallery spaces at Newcastle Contemporary Art.

The exhibition continues Le Bas’ exploration of linguistics, mythology and Gypsy Roma Traveller narratives through textiles, language and storytelling. A red thread—rich with symbolism across Roma, Japanese, and Ancient Greek mythology—runs like a pulse through the exhibition, linking both gallery spaces while serving as a metaphor for fate, connection, and defiance. Holding this thread in place are silver needles—both functional tools and potent symbols—brought to life in the form of two giant sculptural needles that will take centre stage in Le Bas’ accompanying performance work.

Over the course of the exhibition there will be several public performances. Please see the NCA website for details and tickets.

The exhibition is open to the public Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 12pm – 5pm from May 31st to August 2nd.
