Gary Carter x Rachel Brook

17 January 2022

We have a brand new exhibition opening this week in our foyer space!

The work of two of our current studio holders, Rachel Brook and Gary Carter, come together for this cross-disciplinary collaborative exhibition showcasing vibrant colours, abstract shapes and complex geometry. Read their artist statements below.

Gary Carter

Gary Carter studied Fine Art at Newcastle Universities School of Fine Art and has been painting for many years in a studio space where he has been developing his creative practice further. Carter uses the visual language of abstraction, inspired by artists past and present. Carter explores the juxtaposition of space, through blocks of colour, oil paint and other mediums.

Rachel Eleanor Brook

Rachel Eleanor Brook produces abstract art, mixed media with illustration, artist film and digital art. Digitally and through illustration she considers complex geometric themes and uses bold colour and shape. Brook’s artist film work presents a range of dream-like perspectives, combining surrealism with art documentary, and as a disabled person, explores the ambient perspectives of living with an “invisible” condition. Rachel has an MA in Film Studies and a BA in Film and Sociology from University of Northumbria and diplomas from London Academy of Media and Film in Video Editing and Documentary Filmmaking. As an arts freelancer Brook facilitates artistic creation with community groups, considering learner-led, collaborative approaches to idea development and is trained in mental health awareness, autism awareness and dementia awareness.
